5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry, Company E, "Augusta Greys"

Our Alter Ego

28th New York State Volunteers

The 28th New York was formed in Niagra County, New York shortly after the beginning of hostilities. The 5th VA faced the 28th on more than one occasion. Most notable was at Cedar Mountain, where the 5th was a key player in repulsing a Yankee charge that included the 28th. A member of Comany E is credited with captuing the flag of the 28th. Many years later, in 1883, a reunion was held in New York that included survivors of both regiments. The flag of the 28th was officially retuned by the 5th VA. A similar event took place a year later in Staunton, VA

When the need arises, members of the Augusta Greys are honored to portray this regiment of worthy foes. Painstaking research went int identification and reproduction of the 28th original flag.

This is the only known photo of the 28ths flag. The missing piece in the center was cut out by the color bearer when the flag was captured.

Beside it is a partial view of our completed reproduction.
