As you begin making the investments in your reenacting hobby, let us help you out by providing what you need to get started. Always ask an experienced reenacftor prior to making your first purchases. Also, check-out out sutlers on our links page
Headgear – Kepi, Bummer,or slouch hats are allowable. Avoid trim colors other than black, the authorized color for militia trim.
Coat – A.N.V. shell jacket in mixed gray(medium gray). Also called a type 2 or type 3 shell jacket. VA buttons are prefered. Avoid CSA buttons as militia units typically wore state buttons
Shirt – Any period shirt.
Trousers – Any period style or color
Suspenders – Any period type (no elastic or colors)
Socks – Wool, solid color.
Shoes –
The following should be used as equipment standards:
Haversack – Any period haversack.
Waist belt – Black leather with brass keeper.
Belt buckle – Brass clip corner.
Cap box – US type M 1850, black
Cartridge box –
Canteen – Any period military issue
Musket – 3-banded 1853
Bayonet and scabbard – To fit above rifle
Mess gear – Period cup, plate, knife, fork, and spoon
Bedding – Wool blankets or quilts
Other useful items to have:
Gum blanket –
Shelter half or “A” tent
Lantern – Any period type
Wool gloves - Any period type
Scarf – Any period type
Musket nipple wrench
Great coat – Gray or sky blue
Headgear – McDowell brim blue forage cap with light blue piping and
Shirt – Periwinkle Blue civilian shirt with collar
Vest – Any civilian or military vest is fine.
Jacket – Any Confederate Gray Richmond Depot style.
Pants –
Socks – Beige wool socks preferred.
Shoes – Brogans
Haversack – White Canvas
Accouterments – Black leather cartridge box on a sling with a Virginia Breast plate, belt with Clip Corner Buckle, and Black cap box.
Canteen – Smooth side or bull’s eye style preferred with kersey blue or homespun cover.
Rifle – Prewar rifle preferred (i.e. 1842
